General Information
The Preah Vihear Province shares borders with Thailand and Laos to the north, as well as Siem Reap, Oddor Meanchey, Stung Treng and Kompong Thom within Cambodia. Much of the province is extremely remote and heavily forested, although large logging concessions are doing their best to change this, carving huge tracts of pristine tropical hardwoods out of the landscape. The province remains desperately poor, thanks in part to a disastrous infrastructure with no major roads in existence. The road linking the provincial capital Tbeng Meanchey to Choam Ksant is only passable for half the year, and that's stretching the definition of passable.
However, the future may be brighter, as within the province's lengthy boundaries are three of the most impressive legacies from the Angkorian era: the mountain temple of Prasat Preah Vihear, the 10th-century capital of Koh Ker and the mighty Preah Khan. These temples are all extremely difficult to visit, requiring long and tough overland journeys and the distinct possibility of a night in the forest. In the wet season, they are simply unreachable. However, there are various plans to upgrade the roads leading to each of these incredible locations, which in time could ensure the temples of Preah Vihear Province become one of the most important stops on a visit to Cambodia.
