General Information
Dien Bien is a new province which was created by a split of the former Lai Chau Province in the early 2004 according to Resolution No.22 of the fourth meeting session of eleventh term National Congress. This mountainous province is located in the North-west of Vietnam, and has total area of 9,554.107 km2 at the latitude of 20o54' - 22o33' North, longtitude of 102o10' - 103o36' East.
Dien Bien province includes all the land in the south of Ða River (Black River), and new Lai Chau Province covers all the land in the north of Da River. Located in northwest Vietnam , Dien Bien is shares borders with China, Laos, and Lai Chau and Son La provinces. The centre of this province is now Dien Bien Phu , which is surrounded by mountains and lies in the Muong Thanh valley, a 20-km long and 6-km wide heart-shaped basin. The Nam Rom River runs across the valley, which is why the Dien Bien Phu valley is so fertile.
